I have booted with only the target drive attached and made sure that the BIOS was looking at the correct drive. The UUID of the copied partitions matches the originals and the UUID of the / partition is correctly reflected in the nf file. There are differences in bytes 447 - 512 as this contains the partitioning layout. Similarly I have used dd to write the MBRs to files and compared them. I have checked a number of possible causes:īy means of a tool called Beyond Compare I have verified that the /boot directories and contents are identical.

Sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdc bs=446 count=1Ĥ - Comment out the fstab entry for /data on the target drive as that partition was not copiedĪll of this seems to have succeeded except that the PC will not boot from the target drive. Sudo dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdc2 conv=notruncģ - Copy the bootstrap portion of the MBR - again with dd Sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdc1 conv=notrunc is 18 GB on the target and /home is 5 GB.Ģ - Boot the PC from a CentOS 6.7 live CD and copy the data to the target with dd (source sda, target sdc) I made them a little larger than the source as I had a problem when I tried to match exactly (drive geometry I think). data - the rest of the drive - this data is backed up separately and would not be copied.įollowing considerable research I determined the following plan.ġ - Create 2 partitions on the target drive. I have the drives partitioned as follows: Until I have some mileage on the new drive I would like to copy the OS from the 240 to a 64 as backup. I recently migrated from a 240 GB SSD to a faster 250 GB SSD. However, Clonezilla will not migrate to a smaller hard drive. I have used Clonezilla to migrate to a larger hard drive.

Works fine and I have on occasion needed to restore my OS partition - and it has saved my day.
